Thesis Title:
First Memories

The background of the story is an internal world of a young child. I researched Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development to examine young children’s cognition. Children’s drawings are also good materials to show their psychological state. I found out that children’s vision is quite different from adult ’ s vision. I assumed that children ’ s vision is also related to hallucination ’ s symptoms. I refer to the various definitions and the symptoms of hallucination in constructing my project. Hallucination is also connected with dream-related art, such as Alice ’ s Adventures in Wonderland, a story where Alice has weird experiences after she has a dream. A famous Japanese animation, Spirited Away has a similar plot. Both are fantasy stories that include reality and dreams. These two dream-like works of art express unlimited imagination using the same material, dream. I also compare the Alice in Wonderland syndrome ’ s symptom with hallucination’s symptom. A surrealist painter, Salvador Dali’s paintings also inspire me. He is a dream artist. He used the material from dreams to express his unlimited imagination. A film, Waking Life is another work of dream art. It is a rotoscoped animation that is talking about a dream philosophically.

Hallucination and dream arts are materials also relate to techniques of visual distortion. I have determined that visual distortion is good way to represent the inside life of a dream. Researches on various dream-like works of art incited me to develop the imagination of dream world.
